Chronological Engine
The Chronological Engine was prompted by an idea for a clock where the hands can't travel right around the dial! In an invention reminiscent of Victorian machines, the Chronological Engine tells the time with separate hour and minute hands. It has a dedicated hour hand that points to the current hour without moving between hours, returning to zero after midday and midnight. Minutes are displayed on an illuminated central dial.
Counted or passing hourly chimes, a countdown timer and a daily alarm function are also provided. Each machine is beautifully constructed from specially designed engineered components, mounted on a polished wooden plaque. The steampunk design is evocative of early machines where steam was the common motive force and every technological step was celebrated through ingenuity and engineering employing brass and copper components that were proudly displayed.  Adjustments are made by moving a control lever over engraved labels, until the correct position is framed within the moving window. The adjustment valve then adjusts the relevant setting - no digital inputs here! The Chronological Engine employs lenses magnifying flickering lamps to indicate AM and PM and they also show whether an alarm has been set. Rather than using a recorded bell sound effect to indicate passing hours, the Chronological Engine uses a real bell and hammer to chime passing or counted hourly chimes. The Chronological Engine responds to movement and will switch off, with it’s illumination fading, if no movement is detected for more than an hour. Upon first detecting movement, the lamp will slowly illuminate and the hands will move to display the current time. As the minute hand moves, illuminated gears can be seen through the window in the clock face. • The Chronological Engine is 37cm high, 47cm wide by 12cm deep. • It is powered by a small plug in mains adaptor. • When no one is present for an hour, it goes to sleep. Once movement is once again detected, the lamp fades up, it chimes and displays the correct time. • The time, chiming preferences and daily alarm are set by moving the Function Select lever and control valve. • It is wall mounted on two keyhole fixings situated on the rear of the machine. • Each machine is individually numbered and the engraved labels and other elements can be further personalised if required. This enables synchronous operation, where each machine performs its hourly or movement controlled tasks sequentially, providing a joyous visual and audible mechanical experience!
